I have amassed $16,000 in credit card debt. I am contemplating the best way to tackle this debt as there are other things that I want to do with my recently purchased condo. However, I will not begin to make any improvements or take on further debt until I am totally credit card debt free.The credit card debt is contain on 2 credit cards that have an interest rate of 9 % and 12 % respectively. I am considering a debt consolidation loan but preliminary research shows that the interest rates being offered are higher than my credit cards interest rate. The fixed payment of a debt consolidation loan is what is most appealing to me. What suggestions do you offer? Is it possible to receive debt consolidation loan at a rate lower than what is being offered? Are there other debt reduction remedies that I should consider? Currently I have several credit cards with $1 2,000 on each. I am a student and work 2 jobs part time and so I don't make enough to just pay several hundred on each per month. I am getting hosed on finance charges on one of my cards, so much so that the monthly balance is going up just from finance charges alone. I am never late on payments and have great credit according to my score and reports . Where can I get a $10,000 debt consolidation loan to put all these on so I can just pay ONE monthly payment?I'm not asking for judgement, and I didn't get these expenses from frivilous purchases. My parents fell on hard times and I had to help them out. Don't make assumptions about someone else's debt. I am asking for advice, not why you think I'm so stupid for having credit cards RICK.

As a single mother, I have accumulated debt as I have chosen to work part time to emotionally support my son, especially in the last few years of school.As a result, my finances are out of control. I have 5 credit cards, some of which have been taken over by collection companies.My responsibility to my son is now done and I am working full time.However, it is a struggle to pay the interest and I simply cannot touch the sides of this debt.I have looked into a debtor's agreement which negotiates with each creditor, pays them out then direct debits from my account for five years $60 wk for a $20K debt. From where I'm sitting, that seems like a great option. Debtors agreements are one step short of bankruptcy but my friend says that will always show up on my credit rating. My argument is that my credit rating is already shot.She says I should try for a loan and negotiate with each creditor to pay less if they get a bulk amount to finalise the matter. She used to do this for a living and says she will help.The difference would be that my credit rating would be bad rather than terrible.My problem is who is going to give me a loan? I wouldn't give me a loan, even though I know I have every intention of using that loan to wipe out interest rates of a debt I'll never be able to pay off as is.Should I approach the bank? Credit union? Is there companies in Australia who help people like me?PS. the debtors agreement was with Fox Symes anyone have any experience with that arrangement?

How or can I obtain a debt consolidation loan?
I have a large amount of credit card debt and very little in the way of security for a consolidation loan. I have spoken to a few lenders, one told me my best option was to go bankrupt, but I did not think this was wise because I'm comfortably paying the minimum amount every month, I'm just finding it hard to make serious inroads. The other offered me a loan that would mean I would be paying more to service that loan per month than if I did nothing and just payed all of my credit cards separately each month so I did not see how this would help me and thought it was pretty stupid.Apart from asking the banks to lower my interest rate, what other options do I have, if any?Thanks
