Question: I am running 35 miles per week, losing fat on stomach, but not losing weight? where is the weight moving to?

I am a male, 5'7 150 lbs. I have been losing fat on my stomach (pinch test), but the scale does not reflect the change. I would like to get down to 140, as I believe this is my ideal weight for my body type. I havent' noticed my leg muscles getting any bigger, so I was just curious why I weighed the same when my stomach has obviously lost fat. Thanks! |

That may be the lowest your body will let you be without being sick. A lot of that may have to do with your bone structure and there is nothing you can do about that. |

Muscle weighs more then fat so the little muscle you have gained is making you weight the same as all the fat that you use to have. My husband had the same problem and the doctor told him not to worry about what the scale says so much as the body fat ratio. |

You just answered your own question. As you are losing fat you are gaining muscle. As long as you feel and look good then what does it matter? |

Your arm muscles may be getting larger and for sure your legs may not look like the muscles have grown but they should be more taut. hope this helps |

Congratulations on losing the fat on your stomach. Many strive for this and cannot achieve it. Rather than focus on the number on the scale, focus on how you feel, how your clothes fit, how much more energy you have, etc. Even focus on inches lost. Remember too that while you are running you want to incorporate other exercise as well. Stretching and some strength exercises. Muscle does weigh more than fat as well. |

Muscle weighs 4 times more than fat pluss if you are running that much you are probably consuming alot of fluids. |

As it has amounted to muscle mass. believe me even the smallest change in your regime can make a big difference. it has not became other fat, your muscles have better developed and gained mass without you realising it. it is the same for peoplle on diets, they cannot see or feel the weight coming off although they have made a huge difference to their physical appearance..... congratulations and dont be disheartened. this maintained weight it not a bad thing! |

The reason your not losing weight, but your getting skinner is because your building muscle, muscle weighs way more than fat does. Plus its better to have because what you eat you burn and use for energy, and wven when your not working out, and even just sleeping, your muscles are still burnbing the calories and sugars you've eaten that day. Its a plus to weight loss, but in the end you might end up weighing more. |

It may not look like it, but you're gaining leg muscle. You're not noticing because you're also doing cardio which gains definition and loses fat. Therefore your legs are not going to look all that much bigger but you should notice that they feel firmer when you flex your muscles.... and that is your answer right there. Muscle weighs more than fat. Therefore, while you are losing stomache fat, you are still gaining leg muscle. |

You're gaining muscle at the same time. Muscle is heavier than fat so it will appear that you aren't losing weight and some people even gain weight when they start working out or do weights. Concentrate on toning up rather than losing weight as you may also have a heavier bone structure than someone else of the same height so it isn't really a good way to judge. |

Despite what a lot of people say, it's incorrect to assume that fat turns to muscle; they're two different types of body tissue. Fat is simply stored excess energy; burning it won't turn it into muscle. So the answer isn't as simple as it seems. Muscle is heavier than fat, however there's no real reason to be gaining muscle mass unless you're doing any weight training or specific body exercises along with the running. If you are, then the added weight is simply the formation of muscle. If not, then i'm not sure why you're still the same weight :) |
